Acute & Chronic Pancreatitis

Precision care for gastrointestinal cancers, ensuring optimal outcomes with minimal recovery time.

Acute & Chronic Pancreatitis

The pancreas plays a crucial role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. However, inflammation of the pancreas—known as pancreatitis—can lead to severe complications if left untreated. Pancreatitis is categorized into two types: acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis.

Acute Pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe abdominal pain and other complications. It is often triggered by gallstones, excessive alcohol consumption, infections, or certain medications.

Symptoms of Acute Pancreatitis
  • Intense, persistent upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Fever and chills

  • Rapid pulse

  • Swollen or tender abdomen

  • Jaundice (in some cases)

Causes & Risk Factors
  • Gallstones blocking the pancreatic duct

  • Chronic and excessive alcohol consumption

  • High triglyceride levels

  • Certain infections or autoimmune diseases

  • Trauma to the pancreas due to injury or surgery

  • Certain medications like corticosteroids and diuretics

Treatment for Acute Pancreatitis

Treatment depends on severity. Mild cases may require hospitalization for IV fluids, pain management, and fasting to rest the pancreas. Severe cases may necessitate intensive care, drainage of fluid collections, or surgical interventions to remove gallstones or damaged tissue.

Chronic Pancreatitis

Chronic pancreatitis is a long-standing inflammation of the pancreas that leads to permanent damage and scarring. Over time, it impairs digestion and insulin production, leading to malnutrition and diabetes.

Symptoms of Chronic Pancreatitis
  • Persistent abdominal pain

  • Unintentional weight loss

  • Greasy, foul-smelling stools (steatorrhea)

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Jaundice in severe cases

  • Increased risk of diabetes due to pancreatic damage

Causes & Risk Factors
  • Long-term heavy alcohol use

  • Genetic factors (hereditary pancreatitis)

  • Cystic fibrosis

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Repeated episodes of acute pancreatitis

  • Blockages in the pancreatic duct

Treatment for Chronic Pancreatitis

Management focuses on pain control, dietary modifications, and enzyme supplements to aid digestion. Patients may require insulin therapy if diabetes develops. In severe cases, surgical interventions such as pancreatic drainage, partial pancreas removal, or total pancreatectomy may be necessary.
